The Gloster aircraft pictured in the article the Gloster E.28/39, a purely experiemental aircraft designed to proved the practicality of a jet powered aircraft. It can be compared to the Heinkel 178 in this respect. Although it's performance was roughly comparable to the contemporary Spitfire it was never used as a war plane.

The Gloster Meteor which was actually used against the flying bombs (robot bomb was one of the first names given to the to V-1, along with buzz bomb and, finally, doodelbug) was a larger, twin engined design, airframe by Glosters, engines by Rolls Royce. Although fast enough to catch the V-1, it was inferior to the Me262. However, the two never met in combat.

The P-59 was a failure and it wasn't until the P-80 Shooting Star that the US produced a decent jet fighter.

Outwitting is not needed, just flying fast enough to leave most interceptors behind. Exceptions are Mosquito, which downed 428 of those pesky V-1s, Spitfire XIV downed 303, Mustang 232 and all other types combined 158.

As far as I can see, Gloster Meteor was pure Brittish design. And now it's better to stop, I have 8 tabs open for just checking things for this entry alone.....
