I don’t think this A-plane would have vast immediate application even in military and for commercial usage it doesn’t have any sense. However I support making several such planes for experimental purposes. They could have a great future, but they must be properly developed and improved. Experience is criteria of truth.

I saw a fascinating episode of one of the History/Discovery shows where a nuclear ramjet engine is tested for a supersonic intercontinental cruise missile.
They could only test it for a few minutes at a time due to the compressed air it needed to duplicate cruising speed/altiude.
The tests were deemed sucessful, but ICBMs made the project obsolete before completion.
They measured engine teperature by exactly determining how red the metal was glowing.
The fuel rods were the size and shape of pencils, only longer. I'll try to find a link for that show. Is everything on YouTube yet?

There was a British spy movie (I think) where a magical alloy 3/8 inch thick provided sheilding equivalent to several feet of lead, which made nuclear aircraft practical. I'll try to find a link for that.

Compare the two planes here:http://cgi.ebay.com/XB-70-NASA-Valkyrie-American-XB70-Plane-Wood-Model-Big_W0QQitemZ7712807882QQcategoryZ1346QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

What gets me about this whole concept is phrases like:
"persons in a narrow belt as far as 35 miles downwind may receive “maximum permissible exposure,”
or:
"When irradiated, high-strength metals become brittle and weak, rubber loses its elasticity, lubricants become gaseous and gummy"
or:
"Meltdown could occur when the reactor’s core melts because of coolant system failure"
and:
"The NX2’s design speed of a subsonic 500 to 600 mph and its modest ceiling of about 40,000 ft" (747 does this every day)
considering the 24 acknowledged nuclear 'incidents' that have happened with conventional aircraft:
http://www.lutins.org/nukes.html#bombs
It's kind of scary to imagine what would have happened with these things in the skies around the world

Interesting ... this plane bears more than a passing resemblance to North American's XB-70.
