		<description>Huh, that makes sense, but wouldn&#039;t you just load a single strip and shift electronically? They seemed to indicate it was endless (looped), which would make sense for something that actually moved.</description>

		<description>I&#039;d say the punch-paper tape contains the letters coded in a human readable form. You will essentially have one row per pixel row.

I suppose the display itself works via shift registers. It would make sense as this provides very simple interfaces and you can also scroll your messages very easily. You can also build longer signs without having to change much of the electronics.
At least the displays installed till the 70s worked that way. (those worked with discrete transistors!)</description>
