Imports to the US started toward the end of the model&#039;s life in 1968, by none other than Malcolm Bricklin. Some were unsold into 1970, even after Subaru started importing its&#039; larger, front-drive models to the US that year.

Sometime in the early &#039;70s, Subaru got a contract from the Japanese forest service for specially-built 4WD versions of their 1600cc FWD wagon.
 The then-president of Subaru of America opined that he could sell a few of those, it was made a production model for 1975, and.....you know the rest.</description>
