		<description>A monorail is nothing more than an electric train with one rail instead of two.

It has been tried in the USA (Seattle and Las Vegas) and proved not to be the panacea that its supporters claim.  Oh, yeah, Disneyland also.

Why not just build an elevated train with two rails?  As it turns out, supports for monorail tracks are not significantly smaller or lighter than conventional two-rail elevated trains (only somewhat smaller...check out the Las Vegas monorail).  Technology for conventional two-rail trains is &quot;off-the-shelf&quot; and made by dozens of companies.  Monorail technology is made by a smaller number of manufacturers, and if they went out of business, anyone with a monorail system would be stuck with no source of parts for repairs.  Monorail cars are too small for robust mass transit applications.  

Monorails are not all they are cracked up to be.  And, since they&#039;ve been in operation in various locations for over 100 years, they certainly are not the &quot;transit mode of the future.&quot;</description>

It seems to have been an experimental line rather than a real attempt at commuter transport, as this article implies. By 1950, the track had been abandoned, only four years after this story: see detailed pictures here http://dewi.ca/trains/bennie/index.html. Another page tells me that the track was built in 1930, but by 1937 the inventor was bankrupt, and the track was torn up in 1941 for scrap in wartime, so Science and Mechanics was being a bit careless with the truth in discussing it as if it was a promising current project! The Elberfeld monorail, however, is still running, albeit with neater-looking cars and track than shown in this article: see http://www.monorails.org/tMspages/Wuprtal.html.</description>
