jacqueline...
There might be countries someplace based on an unsustainable premise.
They may reach the point where juggling the books, lying to their citizens and themselves
no longer works.
That can't be good worldwide.

Jayessell; From some of my reading, some countries do exactly that, make the floor properly drained. I've read some countries also go wildly the other direction so far as to put in wall to wall carpet in the bathroom. Damned if I can remember which is where so don't quote me.

StevnJessie1; re jet packs; they're for sale http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizons/2010/0226/Jetpack-for-sale-seriously & http://gammasquad.uproxx.com/2010/03/jetpack-for-sale

Hmmm... Wonder if this is where Disney got his inspiration for EPCOT? EPCOT looks very much like this minus Walt's addition of a fully enclosed themed mall at the center of the inner hub.

Actually this article didn’t do too badly. It caught on to the economic problems of supersonic public transport [other than the sonic boom]. They predict the Aerospace plane and peg the type of people to use it. We might not have it now, but it’s something that was tried to be created in the 90’s. The sawdust to food isn’t too far off as we’re trying to make cellulose wastes [sawdusts, rice and wheat straw] into more digestible forms for both cattle and ethanol manufacture. It’s interesting they mention ‘aerogel’ blankets at the end - something that’s pretty intensely studied right now but not as bedding. They get the idea that Fax machines will have their day, but not that they’ll be almost as common as typewriters at one point. [In Japan, they seem to have become a home appliance like answering machines were here.] My mother’s favorite prediction was the house you could hose clean. She’d have loved to haul out a sprinkler and clean house. As I pointed out to her, all you’d have to do is make a fully tiled house, live with outdoor furniture and make the cabinets and closets water tight. For some reason, she didn’t like that suggestion.

One thing I’ve found incredibly stupid in US house designs there’s no floor drain in case of broken pipes or kids overflowing sinks and tubs. Frankly, I’d rather take a power washer to a bathroom than scrub it by hand.

Did anyone live next to an airport in the 1950s? (Or should I say 'late 1940s'?)
If jets were noisier than prop planes, how much noisier would a rocket be?
I can't imagine puting the airport in the center of town!

(To our pals in the armed forces, how do you sleep with the helicopters
and other aircraft taking off and landing day and night?)

carlm: Not really. By the time that this article was written the transistor at Bell Labs was still a desk top experiment. http://www.sciencefriday.com/images/shows/1997/121297/trtimeline.html Since the February 1950 issue is published in Jan 1950 and the article had to go through the editorial process before that, it pushes us back to a period in time where we weren't sure where transistors were going to wind up.

the prediction about thorium taking over when uranium 235 becomes scarce actually looks like it might come to fruition soon, thorium plants are safer and do not produce any dangerous nuclear waste (thorium when not undergoing fission is rather safe. There was recently and article in Scientific American detailing this.

Leaving aside the obligatory George Jetsonisms (personal helicopters and so on), it's interesting how important recycling, clean air and alternative energy was in this vision of the future. They predict nuclear ships just a few years before the N.S. Savannah made atomic powered ships a reality, yet we abandoned the idea and now burn diesel to ship junk from China to Walmart. I think the writers way overestimated the public's willingness to live in an environment where nothing was permanent and everything could be washed off with a hose.
