THE CURE FOR STAMMERING

WITH phonograph recordings, a new kind of lip training, and delicate electric brain-wave detectors, scientists are waging a winning war on stammering. Their researches mean new hope for the 1,000,000 or more Americans who suffer from the ailment. Do you stammer? Whether you do or not, you can join the nation-wide fight to end the personal suffering and the $1,000,000,000-a-year economic loss caused by disordered speech. Experts have now discovered such simple methods of treatment that nearly anyone can cure himself, or show a friend how to do it.

These findings spring from the latest work in speech-correction clinics throughout the country, where every modern scientific weapon helps treat even the most refractory cases of stammering. Enter one of the most advanced of these institutions, headed by Dr. Lee Edward Travis at the University of Southern California, and you will see how research and actual treatment go hand in hand.

First, the subject speaks into a microphone, while a phonograph disk makes a permanent record of his voice. This serves a double purpose. Played back subsequently, it encourages him by showing him the progress he has made under treatment. With hundreds of other records, it also enables research workers to compare different types of stammering. Cases range from persons who barely stammer to others whose stammering* spasms last as long as half an hour.

Brain waves, the faint electrical impulses that reveal a person’s nervous make-up, are being studied as a possible help in diagnosing cases of stammering. In recording them, a subject lies relaxed within a room inclosed by copper screens to shield the ultrasensitive electrical instruments from outside influences. As many as ten electrodes, with wires leading to recording apparatus, are attached to his scalp. Then an amplifier magnifies the brain currents, so that they may be recorded in a wavy line on an endless tape. A normal person gives a pattern resembling a fairly regular row of saw teeth. In the extreme case of a brain tumor, the line wavers aimlessly all over the chart. Experimenters hope to find intermediate sorts of brain waves, characteristic of various classes of stammerers, and thus link impaired speech with other types of nervous disorders. Manipulating facial muscles, a new treatment developed by Mrs. Edna Hill Young and elaborated upon by Dr. Travis, helps overcome severe stammering. Even backward children unable to utter a word have been taught to speak. With deft fingers, the “trainer” shapes the subject’s lips so that nothing but the correct sound can possibly come out. Thus a patient, who previously could be trained only by visual and hearing aids, now experiences the exact “feel” of pronouncing a syllable. So successful has the method proved that the Rockefeller Foundation has financed large-scale training of operators for clinics.

Stammering usually begins in childhood and parents should be on the watch for it, experts say, since an immediate cure is much easier than a later one. Generally, a young child stammers because he has been forced to change from a left-handed to a right-handed way of doing things. Specialists explain that the left hemisphere of the brain controls the right side of the body, and vice versa. One of the two brain hemispheres always is “dominant.” Disturbing that dominance, before it has fully developed, produces mental confusion and affects the brain center of speech, causing stammering. After a boy or girl is sixteen years old, however, the dominance of one side of the brain is firmly established, and no harm can be done in making a right-hander out of a “southpaw.”

Helpful and interesting conclusions for adults also emerge from clinical observations of thousands who trip and stumble over their words. Get one of them good and mad, and he will forget to stammer! Evidently there is nothing wrong with the mechanical parts of his speaking organs. His real trouble might be likened to “static” in the control line linking the brain and the vocal muscles. Usually this results from undue nervous tension. Once a stammerer learns to overcome his nervous condition, or remove its cause, self-cures are readily possible. Thus anyone can regain and enjoy to the fullest his most human faculty, speech.

  17. see all members those who r suffering stammer problem please donot think that you are having stammering and while speaking be prepared, i think that you all can sing well with out stammer, why it is happening because you know the words which should come out at that right time, so be prepared and speak loudly in a room, and while presenting bee cool, mainly while presenting dont ever take it into your mind that you are having stammer, I WILL TELL U WHY STAMMER CAUSES YOU. ..according to science if we get heart to the mind from outer side of a skull the internal chord of a brain will not function well, which use to get the word sponteniously, that will not come out at the right time. it is better to go for pranayam and yoga in which throat of thyroyd gland exercise is done due to which we can cure some how. but there is no full cure treatment in this world. we should make controle on our selves and think before u talk, let it take more time no matter but speak clearly and slowly, which will help u a lot and remind u that i have cured 70% of mine. got it be relaxed all the time and meditate, the big big writer says “THINK BEFORE YOU TALK” , some scientists are also suffred from stammer they r –einstine, david.. they have hard feeling in them and suceeded in there life, nomatter what the person is thinking about you because” SUCESS WILL NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS THINKING, BUT IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE WAY YOU ARE THINKING” so all the best for you all see astha channel, do yoga ,meditation, breathing exercises all which you are needed. thank you…

  48. Yes Rukie,

Treatment suggested by your teacher is correct. Stammering is just another habbit. By reading aloud from book in room helps our vocal cords in practising the words and also it boosts our confidence (because we generally do not stammer when alone). Here, for our nervous system, reading from books is same as reading from our minds; as stammers generally think the words they will speak the next.

  50. i have been stuttering since my childhood and i remember the horrible comments of people specially my cousins and other reltives with whom i used to talk the most that i stammer very badly.although very few outsiders could have recognize ma disorder.yet i never took it so much upon me UNTILL i join university.i’m currently a student of advance nursing and this horrible thing(stammering) has been chasing me faster as passage of time…i’m in third year now and since first year i have got difficulty in different situations. let me start from the begining .from the start of the day this stammering resist me to say PRESENT MISS on my name calling for attendence.i’d not say that i stammer on all the words .its usually with some words starting from the letters like P, V, L(specially), M, N,R,S,U….maybe many more.
i thought i should try to find out wht does it cause because i realized that it’s not through the whole year but some times in between for weeks and suddnly it gets disappear as i never have this problem…i’ve seen a therapist at my hospital area fro couple of times and she tought me some deep breathing exercises which i had followed and turned up with no results. then one day i realised that due to nostalgia, home sickness, stress of studies and burden up with more things and responsiblities around i have been listening music more than before for relaxation.i thought let’s stop this new thing and then see wht happens…the results horrified me…i stopped stammering after a week of not listening any music for some days(maybe 7)…i took this all experience to my therapist and she refused to accept this theory of mine saying that she has never encoutered such case instead music is one of the relaxing techniques recommended to people with stammering to relax more than ever…and one day i stoped going to her…now it’s been a year i’m not having any treatment…..these days when there’s a lot of functions around me,many weddings, parties, friends in my class who listens music during break times has increases, my stammering has increased a lot.i can’t help it because i can tell world that they can listen music because it causes me stammering……i’ve so many presentations due this semester, so much of the group work and projects in university that i’m in need of your help very badly…..
pls write me back about my ever first email to any organization calling for help regarding my stammering…..

  51. I don’t know how to post material in this blog. so please mail me from ur email to get some material on it. Also, the most important factor here is to understand WHY you stammer. Once you find this WHY, you will have many ways to cure it. so I advise to find the reason for your stammering. (I don’t think Music can be; but yes your body reactions while music can be reason for it)…

  53. I have had a stammer ever since i can remember. A couple of years ago i started speeach therpay. Since then i have left and have greater control over my stammer. For anyone who wants to get rid of their stammer, that will never happen. Chances are, you will always have your stammer. Speech therapy hepls you to accept your stammer and not be ashamed of it, or let it hold you back. Therapy aslo helped me to control my stammer. I was in therapy for around 18 months, and when i left, i was a different person. I cant describe how much it changes you. But the hard work doesnt stop there. You need to stick at practising the techniques you learned at therapy, otherwise, you end up going back to the way you were when you first started therapy. Thats what happened to me. A few months after i left therapy, i got lazy and didnt keep on top of my techniques. I fell back into my stammer and let it control my life again. Its only recetly, 1 year after i left therapy, that i have got back on the wagon. Therapy isnt easy. It was the single most hardest thing that i have ever had to do in my life. I learned not to hide my stammer. And i even learned how to be open about it, nd to show it. That was really hard. But if you can get over that, the rest is not as hard. Dont ever give up on your stammer. Dont let in control you. Get to therapy. Stick to the hard work. Dont ever give up, and i gaurantee you that your life will change. But the most important hing to remeber is that your stammer will alwyas be with you. The difference is, it no onger controls you…..you control it!

  54. Hi Hina..
    hope you doing good.
well read your note, and it seems like i also have the same problem, like calling for the name in class and things like these..
well i dont have any cure for that or like you said about music that when you stopped listening it helped you in the cure of stutter..
but i just want to know i simple thing from, as you are also in university and these things might have come across you as well, so how you do the presentations, or calss participations and group discussions??? i cant tell you but those were the most difficult things which i couldnt do, and i always use to hide form that…

but i learned one thing. i never stepped back. i did all the presentations, i did all the group discussions and bla bla , because i knew one thing in it that the ppl sitting in front of me are my friends, and what so ever happens they will support me, wont laugh at me. and it helped me quite alot. I guess if you do the same so you will feel little good in your normal behaviour.. Just try it once.

But it doesnt end here. The real part starts when i call someone and i dont know what happens to me, i cant speak, words done come out and its like a long gap only when i start, but once i start then its fine. and Secondly the most worst part, when i go for an interview, i suck, trust me i dont know why it happens but i stammer there so much that they dont even think about me for a second…
So how you deal with all this???

May be by this whole converstion we can help others or we all can find a cure for that.

    Comment by Hatim Ali — October 17, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

  55. Hi guys,
John is correct; in the sense that stammer will never go permanently unless you won’t change yourself permanently..Meaning is that we stammer because of 2 reasons only. 1st is any physical challenges in our throat. 2nd is that we have a habit of it. Now, for the 1st cause, people should consult proper doctor. And for 2nd cause, only we can help ourself. The habit here is not necessarily of stammering only. But there can be other habits or some unconsciousness habits of our body/mind which is the cause of our stammering. This habit also includes our habits of lifestyle i.e how we live in our day-to-day life. This habits also include how we perceive anything good or bad. This habit also includes our nature (aggressive, introvert, etc). This habit also include our listening style, our speaking style, etc. So there can be 100 reasons for stammering and different people have different cause for it. When some forces (speech pathologist, drugs, watching and improving our habits, etc) keeps us out of this habits, we can cure from it but as soon as we stop such anti-stammering force, it attacks back. So the cure would be to change our style permanently. NOw, our habits are all stored in our sub-consiousness mind. And that is why it will come back when we stop practising anti-stammering activities. So the solution would be to re-program our sub-consiousness mind. Now how do we do that?? Its easy…!!! Try practicing it consciously i.e. regularly, daily, 2 times a day, 3 times a day, and so on. After some practise we will have habit of such anti-stammering activity and it can go permanently. It may be possible that stammering may strike back. But then again watch ur habits. Do bad habits come again? If yes try to practice and replace them again…
Also, once you speak fluently, then the confidence level in your mind boosts so much that you will not stammer frequently. Its all physcological.

I am preparing a blog on such tips. will give u link soon.

  57. I have this stammering problem as long as i remember…..in the begning i had a strong controll over it and and only my parents were aware of it….but by the age of 13 it increased a hell lot and became a major problem for me cuz i could not make new friends as my father is in Army and i had to change school after every one or two years….i had problem in asking questions durings lecture and it really frustrated me when i cant participate in disscussions during our class and i cant give out answers just because i stammer. Its been really a nightmare for the past few months as my problem has increased upto unimaginable heights and i consider my self close to a speaking-disabled person.I feel a constrain in my throat while speaking..and it takes a lot of energy to utter only few words…..could there be any muscle weakness(in addition to phsycological problem) that is causing this??

  77. Dear Friends,

First take medium breath and then start speaking in a long lengthening style.
For example, Aaaaaaple…eaaaaarn…….uoooooniversity….like that. Start only with vowels.
Then go for sentences taking breath every time and read it like that.

  101. Hi, i’m from Malaysia. I’ve been stammering since i was 7 if i’m right. My classmates, friends, relatives and even my family laughed at me whenever i spoke, especially on the phone. I stammer all the time. Now i’m a bachelor degree holder in hospitality, getting a job is harder than ever as the interviews are killing me. I’m not sure whether it’s a good idea to reveal to the interviewer about my stammer. Chances are, most employers tend to have a bias view towards people who stammer. And in my country, i have yet to find an organization or society aimed at helping people born with this disadvantage.

i think that stammering has no cure…the scientists and doctors have tried their level best but they cannot cure it, they can only try to reduce it to a certain level.

The only thing left to do is to have faith and believe that maybe one day a miracle may happen and you become one of the normal guys.

  123. Stammering or Stuttering cure centre in Bangalore is run by Mr. Partha.

Partha had organized a similar workshop in Mumbai before he went and settled down to Bangalore. This was like 7 years back and I had taken enrolled myself for the whole course in Mumbai. At first I saw a ray of hope when I was being introduced by his training material like vowel elongation, Long lengthening reading and short lengthening reading techniques. The long lengthening speaking technique calls for a person to take some fresh air through mouth before reading and read each and every word in a rythm and the only difference in short lengthening is you need to elongate the first sound of every word taking in little air from mouth before speaking. Partha claims this will naturally enable a good speaking habit and change the old stammering style.
I can tell you I practiced this day and night sincerely and after some days the effect went and I came back to my old stammering style again even then I kept on practicing this like crazy but it does not help at all.
Partha claims you can speak like this to the outside world with the short lengthening technique, I can tell you confidently you cannot use the rhythmic way of talking like that, i once tried and people were answering me in the same way.
Then he has the mirror, meditation techniques which are not beneficial either. Nobody was benefited from his workshop. I’m not a severe stutterer but there were many severe stutterers who had come with great hope and his workshop didn’t help anyone in spite of everyone sincerely practicing every techniques in his course and practicing even after having a setback but nothing helped.
I don’t know how does he claim he can cure stammering when the goal for stammerers should be to overcome it. Probably I think he saw more earning potential in this than he would if he continued to work as a Chartered Accountant.
