This is awesome.

ESKIMO’S MAP OF DRIFTWOOD
An Eskimo, who had never before seen a map, has just provided the Library of Congress with the first accurate chart of the islands of Dis-ko Bay, Greenland. After a careful survey by sledge and kayak, he whittled relief models of the islands from driftwood and painted them in colors to show lakes, marshes, and vegetation. Sewed to sealskin, they form the map illustrated at left.

The Eskimo’s map seems to be the islands along the southern edge of the bay.

  2. Photoshopped, you can tell by shadows and pixels.

  3. @2: Idiot. You can tell by claiming Photoshop in a 1933 photograph! Good job, Lt Columbo! Once again you caught Charlie red handed!

Looks like this web page is in on the conspiracy as well http://inventors.about.com/od/.....el-Map.htm

I know, I know, Sherlock….Elementary to you, but I’m impressed!

By the way Professor Plum, here is a 1944 article on the map (PDF page 10, document page 80)

  5. Firebrand38, as someone who has done restorations on a few scans of old halftoned photos, I can verify that it takes mad Photoshop skills to touch them up without messing up the existing halftone screen. Charlie is obviously a consumate professional, since the photo in question has an unbroken screen, and I tip my hat to him…

  6. Randy: Actually if you follow the links that I provided you’ll see the identical photo at Google Books and they aren’t known for their use of Photoshop. Anyway, saying that something is Photoshopped implies that it’s a fake and I was disproving that Charlie makes this stuff up.

  7. Firebrand38, sorry, I thought my sarcasm was obvious. Is there a “sarcasm” emoticon I can use in the future? :)

  8. Randy: Re-read some of the “contributions” on this blog and then be real careful about invoking the word “obvious”.

  9. You’ve found me out. Google and I have been working together for years photoshopping history. All to support our liberal socialist agenda. Who do you think faked Obama’s birth certificate?

  18. So what you’re saying is that these are actually maps of Florin and Guilder?

    Comment by Toronto — December 14, 2009 @ 5:33 pm

  19. I think it’s a plot by Florin to blame Guilder. Anything else would be . . . INCONCEIVABLE!

  20. Are you sure you are using that word correctly? I don’t think it means what you think it does….
