I like the photo on the last page where the carrier is handing the letter to the farmer in front of his orange groves. Here's 15541 Rinaldi St. today :

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=15541+Rinaldi+St,+Granada+Hills,+CA+91344&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=34.279227,-118.470471&spn=0.001449,0.003034&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr

I imagine in 1951 the noise from the orange groves wasn't as loud as that 6 lane highway about 30 yards away.

"I’d love to see how it happens now."
You could do something similar to the 'CameraMail' art project, see http://verba.chromogenic.net/archives/2005/01/cameramail.html

That is cool!

I'd love to see how it happens now.

The US Postal Service amazes me. 39 cents and my letters from Michigan to Los Angeles usually take two, sometimes three days. Often overnight to Chicago.
