I've bicycled more than 10,000 miles through 28 states, in addition to 25 years of commuting. I've come to appreciate a broad range of gears, especially when hauling a trailer. I hauled two-year-old twins 4,500 miles in a two wheeled trailer, but I'd choose the one-wheeled BOB as easiest to haul. Ironically, I'd bet my camp on the BOB was much more comfortable than his wooden trailer.

Not really - I rode a similar style of bike (albeit with multiple speeds)around Lake Ontario several years ago. As to it being an 'old dog', I'm sure it was newish then.

Based on my experience with towing things with bikes, the wheels and tires of the trailer would be the biggest problem. My current cargo trailer has 8x3" tires, and is *far* worse to tow than my old one that had 10x1" tires. Some thief is riding very efficiently now. (But the new one has a much higher weight capability - useful during our just-ended garbage strike.)

Riding that old dog of a bike 1,200 miles, even without a wooden trailer, would be quite a feat.
