Curiously, these things do put out a lot of ultraviolet light, much more than visible light. They can also cause a static electric "hair raising" effect, but don't act as actual Tesla Coils (also available in a handheld unit, usually used for finding leaks in glassblown scientific lab equipment, after you pull a mild vacuum on them). A tesla coil used for S&M is about as fun as using a lit cigarette, scars and all.

But! Remember that until recently having a sun tan was a sign of being of low (outdoor laborer) class, or of an "less advanced" race. And so people didn't get much sunlight, so a zap now and again of UV light would provide quite a healthy dose of Vitamin D production, the only vitamin shown to truly help prevent cancer (mainly studied in prostate form, but that's a good model for cancers in general).

Only 10 minutes a day of sunlight is enough to make you quite more resistant to cancer than you otherwise would be, if you don't take a Vitamin D pill several times a week.

And here's your S&M connection:

Catarrh of the Womb -- Use Vaginal electrode No. 24 or No. 26 for five minutes daily. Electrode to be lubricated before insertion.

yes, it cures Catarrh! from the antique manual:

Catarrh - Nasal -- In this condition the nasal tube is used within the nose with a mild current within the nasal passage, 2 to 5 minutes on each side, followed by an application with the surface electrode externally over the area of the nose. Use ozone generator.

Sounds kinky... :P

Anyway, there's a (badly) scanned manual of an antique Violet Wand here:

http://www.violetwand.org/manual.htm

Amazing how the pictures in this manual look like the ones in this ad.
