UKBB, that might be because the south half of the Western Sahara was once called the Rio de Ouro by Portuguese travellers. When the land was absorbed into the Spanish Sahara it was renamed Rio de Oro. The Rio de Oro region has no rivers and no gold, but there's a reason for the name.

It's thought that the "Oro" part of the name comes from the local practise of paying tradesmen in gold dust. The "Rio" may come from a river that once flowed through the area. However, there are no major wadis in the Rio de Oro area, unlike in the north where there's a wide, deep wadi.
