The ground strafer isn't such a wacky idea. The first "Spooky" gunships made it to Vietnam in the very early Sixties using old C-47's. The B-57 had a Gatling gun in its belly for strafing along with a plethora of guns in its wings. It is just that the orbit of the Spooky allowed concentration on a single target. Besides, who is going to stand under an oncoming aircraft firing down vertically?
