I remember as a kid reading Sherlock Holmes stories where Watson was described as "sunburnt" from his years in India. I couldn't understand how a guy who hadn't been in India in years could still be sunburnt. I finally realized that words like "suntanned" or "tanned" hadn't been in use when the books were written.

The word "suntan" was actually popularized by Coco Chanel. She popularized tanning, extreme thinness (to the point of emaciation), and heavy smoking for weight control.
