Models Used in Shaping Mt. Rushmore Group (Dec, 1938)
Models Used in Shaping Mt. Rushmore Group
Right, general view of work on Mt. Rush-more memorial. Inset, Gutzon Borglum inspecting the sculpture, which calls for carving the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt on the mountainside. Workers’ tiny figures give an idea of project’s size
Left, measuring model in studio helps workers locate same relative spot on mountainside. Multiplying studio readings by twelve gives the correct distances. Right, giant proportions of the memorial are illustrated by measurements of this huge face

Where are the models of Mt. Rushmore used by Borglum to carve the mountain? I like to visit them..thanks tomd..9137077866

The model is definitely at Mt. Rushmore, in the Sculptor’s Studio. The studio is open to the public during most of the summer hours that the monument is open. The model shows some of the work which was not completed, including Washington’s coat, Lincoln’s left hand, etc. Here’s an old photo, but it’s pretty much unchanged today.

I saw the model at Mt. Rushmore when I was there about four years ago.

Richard: I was being ironic. If you follow the link I provided it flat out says that the sculpture is at the Studio and available as a tour.
