FB: The text of my post was a question: “Just out of curiosity, what would be an example of a laxative that is habit forming?”

Since Blurgle’s comment was the name of a laxative followed by the reasons it is habit forming I assumed she was just answering my question. I suppose she could have said “Charlie, the answer to your question is:”, but I understood what she meant.

The problem is I did read what you wrote. Did you? Let’s review shall we… I saw one word, Phenolphthalein. Followed by possible side effects. Sorry my psychic abilities failed me about then and I missed the whole thing about how you were actually referring to an ingredient that it didn’t contain.

Firebrand, please read what I wrote. Phenolphthalein was the habit-forming ingredient NR **DID NOT** contain, which is why they could advertise that NR wasn’t habit-forming.

There’s no harm in misunderstanding what someone writes, but it’s awfully rude to arrogantly tell someone “if you don’t know, don’t guess”. I wasn’t guessing; I knew. You simply didn’t understand what I wrote and jumped to the assumption that I must be stupid.

Sorry to break it to you Blurgle, but the active ingredients in Nature’s Remedy (NR, get it?) were Cascara Sagrada and Aloe. This specific formulation was banned for OTC laxatives by the FDA in 1992.

Heroin indeed makes you constipated, as do all opiates. This is sometimes quite handy, since (at least here) Tylenol No. 1 is OTC and very cheap compared to Metamucil.

Phenolphthalein. It doesn’t cause a physical addiction like a morphine addiction, but it can cause rebound constipation – which prompts the user to take a higher dose and become dependent on it for regular movements.
