Or....

A hack Sci Fi writer, having one of his characters once say he'd be rich if he invented a religion, puts that harebrained scheme into motion, using "E-Meters" to prove to people that they're unhappy due to the influence of alien ghosts.

Naaaa! Nobody is that stupid!

It sounds like a bad idea for a party, or a good idea for a "Twilight Zone" episode. Guests are joking around, asking each other stupid questions, when one guest jokingly asks the subject, "Have you ever killed anybody?" Subject says no, lie detector goes crazy, everybody gives the subject the major skunkeye, and he spends the rest of the episode defending himself, only to kill himself in terror at the end. Then the creator of the machine goes, "Wait, there's a busted fuse in this thing. Louie really was telling the truth." And everybody has a good laugh. Or something.
