  2. Haha, no, it’s likely based around something called a “pickup coil”–basically a reverse electromagnet. When subjected to an electromagnetic field (like, say from the speaker in a telephone), a small current is induced in the coil. Hook this up to an amplifier or a transmitter and, taa-daa, you can hear electricity! Like the ad says, this enables you to hear the voice signals inside phones and such. I actually have a little pocket-sized one that I use as a sort of stethoscope for electronics. Put it near different parts of a computer and you can actually hear the data!
