Sculptress Models Novel Desert Dwellings

COMMISSIONED by a wealthy merchant of Tunis, Africa, to design an unusual house, a Czecho-Slovakian sculptress responded by incorporating giant facsimiles of the features of household members in the exterior of the dwelling.

The merchant has two daughters, a son-in-law and a grandson, all of whom are shown in mammoth relief in the lines of the unusual structure. The eyes and mouths of the huge figures serve as doors and windows”.

The unusual design was conceived by a Czecho-Slovakian artist, Mrs. Helen Zelezny.

FRENCH BICYCLE HAS SMALL FRONT WHEEL

Returning to the design of an old-fashioned bicycle, a French inventor is producing one with a small wheel in front and a large one behind. The small wheel steers, while the large one drives. Handlebars are at the rear of the cyclist. The inventor claims his machine embodies scientific principles of balance and structural design. Its rider sits in a comfortable erect position, instead of crouching, so obstructions are unlikely to throw him.

Prove you’re a man to be reckoned with—and the only man who can make the gal in the photo (Fig. 1) blush. Prepare her for the test by painting her cheeks with phenolphthalein solution (from the drug store), and be sure the cheeks are slightly moist when you perform the trick. Ordinarily this solution is colorless, but when a finger (yours) moistened with household ammonia is brought near it, the reaction of the fumes with the solution causes it to turn pink. When the ammonia evaporates, the cheeks lose their color.
