Folding Chair Gives Room to Stand without Blocking the Aisle
Folding chairs with seats that can be raised to give more passage space between rows have been placed on the market. Designed for use in theaters, halls, excursion boats, camps and other places where increased seating capacity is desired, they are strongly built and will not tip over or break easily. Improved construction permits folding and stacking as compactly as boards. When the seat is raised, the user can step back into the space it occupied.

*That’s* what those are for?!?! The seats in my old church’s social hall were like that and nobody knew what the purpose was. Thank you for solving this mystery

It took a few moments for me to realize that the man was standing between the chair legs.
Essentially you stand, lift the seat, and back up into the space occupied by the chair.
A 3/4 view photo would have made this much more clear.
