I read a couple years back (in a firefighter’s blog) that old refrigerators make excellent fire-safes, I have all my kid’s baby pics, grade school art, etc. in one in my basement.

And again, we had one of those when I was a kid! It came with the house; as soon as my parents had enough money to replace it, they did, but I still remember wondering why people in the old days locked their eggs away.

By that time it had been converted to electricity, if it wasn’t electric to start with. It used to buzz like a saw at 4 in the morning.
