I’m not really sure how this would discourage drinking….
Never Again swear drunks who wake up in the Galena, Ill., jailhouse. For there in front of their eyes is the gosh-awful biggest snake they ever saw. Ana wrapped around a pink elephant, too. Jailer George Herman says the scheme may not be scientific, but it works. He’s thinking of adding an octopus.
It used to be said that when people had drunk too much they would start to see pink elephants and that was a sign to stop drinking.
I don’t know where the snake fits in though.

Some people see snakes when they drink too much. Probably something to do with the eyes not focusing right and things twist and turn.
Friend of mine dated a girl that lost bladder control when she was drunk. Once.

I think those are supposed to be signs of the DTs (Delirium Tremens) but I think lots and lots of lots of little roaches, ants, and spiders, painted on the walls would be much more effective.

These are more false signs of the DTs as popularized by the media of the time – movies, radio comedies, books, etc. Everybody “knew” that people with the DTs saw this kind of thing, in the same way they “knew” you saw stars and birdies when you were hit on the head. It was nothing but a trope used to convey the idea of the DTs to readers, moviegoers, and radio listeners.
It’s rather amusing to see someone taking it literally, or, more likely, expecting the inmates of the drunk tank (who knew more about the real DTs than anyone) to do so.

that has to be the worst rendering of an elephant i have ever seen. besides, when someone wakes up with a hangover, they dont think that paintings are real. trust me.
