The Occupation was exceedingly brutal, led by Italy's Blackshirts (30,000 people were slaughtered in retaliation for an attempt on an Italian governor) but never succeeded in pacifying the country. With British help after the beginning of WW2 the Italians were driven out in 1941. In 2005 an obelisk stolen by the Italians during that campaign was returned to Axum. Mussolini was strung up by Italian partisans by rope through his Achilles tendons (ouch!), his opponent, Haile Selassie was returned to power and led Ethiopia until 1974. As Ras (chieftan) Tafari he is still worshipped as God incarnate, a messiah. So yeah, they can win, but...
