BATTERY IN HEEL RUNS LIGHT ON SLIPPER
Created originally for a New York theatrical production, illuminated dancing shoes are now on the market. A small bulb on the tip of the shoe is illuminated by a dry cell battery concealed in the aluminum heel. It lights when the dancer kicks the heel on the floor, striking a switch, seen in the photograph below.
Reminds me of a news story from about 12 years ago. Cops in Petersburg, VA busted three teens at night for drug possession on a traffic stop. One of the kids took off running through the dark woods. But it was easy for the cops to keep track of him. The teen was wearing athletic shoes with lights that flashed at the bottom of the heel when making a step.

And we thought those light-up platform shoes of the 70s were new.

I think the ’90s light-up sneakers stayed on the market in adult sizes just long enough for the “running from the cops in the dark” story to happen (I’ve heard several different versions). You still see some little kids with them, though.
