Detroit had riots in the following decade & the cops wore <a href="http://www.viewimages.com/Search.aspx?mid=2961941&epmid=1&partner=Google" rel="nofollow">more practical gear.</a> And fictional <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robocop" rel="nofollow">Robocop</a> is a Detroit policeman. Interesting in a couple of ways.
