I read somewhere that a US Marine balloon observation unit was sent to the Pacific theater in World War Two, but it might have been sent to Hawaii, which was considered a "combat zone" untill 1944.
Comercial airships may make a return in these days of high gas prices because they often shut off their engines and drifted with the wind for hundreds of miles!

It seems Lt. Hogg was always on the wrong side of these arguments. The U.S. Navy's blimp fleet did go on to provide valuable service in anti-submarine patrols, it was only in this limited way lighter than air craft excelled.

Actually I have posted that article, it's at:

http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2006/05/01/inventors-patent-odd-designs-for-safer-airplanes/

BTW, I should be rolling out an updated site design in a week or two which will solve this problem. You'll be able to browse all of the articles I've posted for each issue.

That's a wonderful view of Hangar One at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, shown at the top of the second page. The building is still there, and looks pretty much the same. It's visible from highway 101. But the rest of the area is very much built up now, and looks very different.

Sadly Cmdr Uhler was proved right, but Lt Hogg hit the nail on the head with his points; "(2) That we have not yet mastered the engineering problems of building dirigibles that are structurally safe. (3) That we have not developed the necessary skill to operate them."
Lighter stronger materials, computer aided controls, weather radar and satellites, and of course helium would all make airships work like champs today.
If we could get over the imagery of the Hindenburg maybe the sky leviathans could someday return
