GIANT CLAMS TRAP SEA DIVERS
IN GRIP OF SHELLS Shells of huge clams found off the coast of Papua often weigh more than 400 pounds. Divers who accidentally step into the open lips of the monsters are not infrequently held with such force that they cannot release themselves and are drowned. The shells close with such force that they serve as gigantic traps.

I was thinking the same thing. I am a certified diver and have never been warned to look out for giant clams, never seen one either. I remember hearing of them as a kid though.

I kid you not: the clams exist. A 2007Columbia Encyclopedia article about them says they can reach up to 500 lb. and be four feet long. However, it also states that claims of people getting trapped are unconfirmed.
Not only is the world stranger than we think, it’s stranger than we can conceive.

Dear Sirs;
Now protected by the Washinton convention on endangered species, the Giant clam most certainly exists, many shells were exported and sold in Europe for use as posh wash basins and garden basins.
