		<description>The ENIAC was operated from 1946 to 1955 so it was shut down three years before this article. Though there were many electrical and electronic &#039;computers&#039; before ENIAC it was the first stored program general purpose computer. Earlier computers like the Harvard Mark I didn&#039;t store their programs in memory, and the Colossus was a single purpose computer.  Here is a picture of the ENIAC:
