Marines did not normally serve aboard gunboats; they provided embassy security in Peking and later served in Shanghai. for anyone unfamiliar wit the topic, Richard McKenna's Sand Pebbles is an excellent fictionalization of his service in China in the 30's and for visual fun watch the movie version starring STEVE MCQUEEN So where are the Marines mentioned other than in the title?
