Actually... no kidding... vibrators were used for pain long before they were found useful for masturbation... but masturbation came in soon after... it was found in the sanitariums (the only places rich enough to afford the first real vibrators) that vibrators could cure "female hysteria"... yep, lock a woman in a little room for too long and they get a bit edgy...
good high powered (not week like your sex toys but something with real force behind it) is a very good way to sooth sore mussels... but finding one with enough force is hard to do nowadays... Nothing cures a sinus headache like putting a vibrator on the sore spots on your cheek and brow... but it takes time... goes through three stages for relief...
first is pain... yeah it hurts when you first apply...
second is inching... this is where most people stop and say it does not work...
third is numbness and relief.. this takes about 15 min or so... but wow... the sinus really open up and the pain is gone...
so my friends... not just sex toys after all... but ;) I have a few of those too... :P

WTF is that attachment with the great sharp points?!? One look at that and any interest in, er, muscle massage would go right out the door!

I have one that has a combination heating/vibrating tip of cobalt blue glass. I found it in the box along with warranty (Made in Hollywood!) and instructions for use by women suffering from the tension created by 'pelvic congestion.'
It's hilarious to read (I made copies for the Good Vibrations vibrator museum) and even shows a woman holding it against her cheek, just like modern ones always seem to.

Yeah these things have been around for a long long time, before electricity even with wind-up mechanisms and such.

They would be sold with various attachments and a manual which described how they could be used to help circulation on the skin or to massage muscles or for other such uses.

That's not what they were generally used for. The manufacturers knew it. The buyers knew it. The sellers knew it.

Nobody said anything other than "What a lovely device for my... sore neck. Yes, I'll take one and a dozen packages of batteries."

I don't know what I was thinking when I read this the first time, I thought it said "Flashlight runs on electric vibrator" and thought someone had come up with that crazy "shaking" flashlight that you see in all the trinket shops.
Must be a sign of age that my mind wandered that direction! LOL
