As absurd as it is to picture a well-connected (ahem!) mob boss pacing the room while on the phone, headset pressed to ear with one hand and carrying the desktop unit on the other like a teenager in a '50s sitcom, but doing exactly that could well have resulted in damning evidence never being recorded. Maybe it's post-post-9/11 paranoia, but I'd like to go back to a world where new technology puts listeners-in (however well-intentioned) back to square one on a semi-regular basis, instead of having "back door" means of surveillance added in (at customers' expense!) as a condition of licensing.
