"...she pointed out heatedly that she slides astride the banister—not in the effete sidesaddle manner."

Had she slid sidesaddle, she would have eventually fallen off and broken every bone in her body.

"Miss Florence Dolph, 101, of Dunmore, Pa., is an ardent subscriber to Dr. Neymann’s beliefs. By way of celebrating her 101st birthday last year, she started the festivities by sliding down the banister—as is her custom every birthday. In answer to a newspaperman’s query about her technique, she pointed out heatedly that she slides astride the banister—not in the effete sidesaddle manner."

The old woman liked her thrills.. One way to stay young I guess..

Interesting thing is though average life expectancy has risen considerably in the last 160 years, normal life expectancy has only increased slightly. The increase in average life expectancy is from fewer people in their teens, twenties, and thirties dying from accidents, infections and disease. The majority of people will still die between 85 and 90 if most common causes are eliminated.
