Silent Violin Makes Its Debut
THE noiseless violin, which can be heard only by the person playing it, is the result of experiments by a German inventor. The instrument should be a boon to student musicians, who may now practice at any time without disturbing the neighbors.

  1. That is the same basic design behind many electric violins these days, although electric violins also have a pickup under the bridge. I wonder how silent that 1931 one actually was – my electric violin is advertised as being “silent” but it’s actually quite audible even unamplified (although nowhere near as loud as a normal violin, of course).
