That is the same basic design behind many electric violins these days, although electric violins also have a pickup under the bridge. I wonder how silent that 1931 one actually was – my electric violin is advertised as being “silent” but it’s actually quite audible even unamplified (although nowhere near as loud as a normal violin, of course).
