Cool! Now I have proof of my fifteen minutes of fame! No doubt I had a copy of the article decades ago, but it's long since discarded.

I like the photo of the "Flash" prototype; others are on my web site at http://www.cfcl.com/rick/personal/apple2e.html

Much of the challenge of modifying the ROM code was because assembly-language programs would simply jump into routines in the ROM. Most were fairly easy to recode, since we had room to relocate small blocks of code elsewhere in the ROM.

One, in particular, was tricky, because it had two entry points, two bytes apart. There wasn't room to insert a 3-byte JMP instruction between them. Late one night, Bryan Stearns (who just participated in Apple's WWDC "Stump the Stars" program) recalled a coding trick used earlier on one of the serial I/O cards. It was a tacky hack wherein the earlier entry executed normal code, but the later entry executed part of an instruction. Jay is probably one of the few who remembers (or can find) the "SEC BCC +18" hack at CLEOL/CLEOLZ.
