AUTOMAT CLEANS AND PAINTS GOLF BALLS

Drop a coin in the slot and this machine will automatically clean and paint your golf balls. Electric mechanism dips the ball in a mixture of lacquer, then holds it in a strong current of warm air and when dry delivers it to the player ready for use. One of the machines is now in use on a Los Angeles, Calif., golf course.

The device is appropriately shaped like a huge golf ball on a tee.

  1. Few of us who play golf now realize how relatively expensive the sport used to be. I have a golf ball ad from 1930 which includes the price: $36.00 a dozen Using the consumer price index for conversion, that’s the equivalent of $446.00 in 2007 dollars! It’s no wonder losing a ball was upsetting and explains why people would repair and repaint their old balls. My golf collection includes a little jar of touch-up paint for golf balls, packaged in the 1940s.
