Funny thing, though. The description of this almost-certainly-mind-bogglingly-dangerous craft includes a snorkel, some ten years in advance of its rediscovery by the Dutch and perfection by the Germans.
It's a good thing that, say, Blohm und Voss never read this article.

So, would the crew have died by drowning in the leaky hull, asphyxiating from exhaust fumes, or crashing from being waterlogged and overweight? I suppose a motorway accident is also a possibility.

Carbonfiber composites would possess the previously mutually exclusive strength and light weight.

Oh we're still working on some minor details, hope is that the air-sub will be operational in 2010.

You just had to bring up Reptillicus Neil! Important thing is that we got it in the end ;)

It's certainly ambitious. The idea would surface (no pun) again 35 years later with the Flying Sub on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but in a somewhat more graceful fashion.
Even as a designer's dream, the air-sea vehicle doesn't show up all that often it seems.

Where was this thing when Denmark had to chase down Reptillicus?

And I'm sure it did none of the things (fly, sail, submerge) particularly well.
