PILE OF ANTLERS A MONUMENT TO THE ELK
Elk antlers have been gathered and formed into an unusual monument in Yellowstone National Park. The monument, which is twelve feet high, marks the place where thousands of elk once roamed, before the large herds were wiped out by hunters. Rangers in the park are responsible for this tribute to the departed elk.
It’s a good thing those Elk had rangers to look after them. Otherwise thousands of them could have been shot.

If I remember my nature studies right, the antlers would have been recently shed by the elk, otherwise they would have been eaten for the calcium or taken home by the hunters.

Elk are the most abundant large mammal found in Yellowstone. More than 30,000 elk from 7-8 different herds summer in Yellowstone and approximately 15,000 to 22,000 winter in the park.
These types of stacks are usually made from antlers shed after ruts. In areas with deer or elk you can find antlers all over the the woods.

Every year the Boy Scouts around those parts gather antlers for the 4 Antler Arches in Jackson Hole, Wyoming:

I have an old postcard from Yellowstone, which has a photo of these elk antlers that were used to make a shed/house. I’m assuming they were the same antlers. Here’s a link to my blog post with a scan of it:

LOOKS LIKE A BIG PILE OF SHED ANTLERS TO ME, WHICH WERE I COME FROM MEANS ALL OF THE ELK ARE STILL ALIVE, REMEMBER ANTLERS FALL OFF EACH YEAR AND HORNS STAY WITH THE ANIMAL. THERE IS NO HUNTING ALLOWED IN OUR NATIONAL PARKS EXCEPT FOR WOLVES. HAVE A GREAT DAY. LOUGHRAN
