I have an old postcard from Yellowstone, which has a photo of these elk antlers that were used to make a shed/house. I'm assuming they were the same antlers. Here's a link to my blog post with a scan of it:

Elk are the most abundant large mammal found in Yellowstone. More than 30,000 elk from 7-8 different herds summer in Yellowstone and approximately 15,000 to 22,000 winter in the park.
These types of stacks are usually made from antlers shed after ruts. In areas with deer or elk you can find antlers all over the the woods.

If I remember my nature studies right, the antlers would have been recently shed by the elk, otherwise they would have been eaten for the calcium or taken home by the hunters.
