Tractor Out-pulls Elephant in Tug-of-War

SEVENTY-TWO hundred pounds of elephant came in second best in a tug-of-war recently conducted between Ruth, a 30-year-old elephant, and a small tractor. Four legs proved to have less “pulling power” than the caterpillar treads of the tractor. The elephant is shown bracing herself just as the irresistible pull of the tractor began to carry her backward.

  1. This marked a turning point in agricultural technology in this country. Farmers were finally convinced to give up using elephants to plow their fields and switched to caterpillar tractors.

  2. In North Carolina it is illegal to use an elephant to plow a field. Its fun to imagine what situation occurred that was so terrible that state lawmakers needed to get involved.
