Our family had one when I was a little kid. One of my memories of that car was in a snowstorm. We were trying to get up a hill that hadn't been plowed. Other cars were skidding all over the place and sliding back down to the bottom. The little red VW spun its wheels at the bottom for a few seconds, and then just motored up the hill, slowly but steadily, and got us home safe & sound.

Darn I wish they were still making those, and that they hadn't become a 1960s cult object and an expensive collector's item after that. Plain simple reliable transportation, with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. I can live with 0 - 60 in 45 seconds, for that kind of solid performance.

This made me think of an advertisement, the copy was something like, "A beautiful picture of a Beetle".

Their was no car in the photo, just a picture of tire tracks in the snow, celebrating the engine-over-drive-wheels traction of the Bug.

Anyone have link? <a href="http://www.aden.co.jp/page_works/vw/English/VW_ad/ad03_1.html" rel="nofollow">Here is the closest I could find.</a>

I still love my 71 Super Beetle just as much as Tom seemed to fall in love with his.

I was driving to work one night, and the rain was coming down fiercely. I happened upon a stretch of road that the water kept getting deeper and deeper. then there were cars stalled out all over. Then there were large trucks stalled, and partially submerged. People were yelling and waving me off, but I knew that I had already passed the point of no return, my wheels were no longer touching the ground. I was floating past them. I kept the car in second gear, and kept on the gas. Soon, the wheels started to skip a little as I got traction again, and then I was through. Made it to work on time :)
