There are still video magnifiers being made – the TVi for example. It’s about $500 plus a tv, but that’s about $35 in 1932 dollars.

The last stand-alone one I recall was a couple of thousand dollars in the 1990s. (I have excellent vision myself but have a few legally blind friends, and once was involved in a text-to-speech program in the early 1980s.)

Many people prefer to read for themselves with a magnifier.)
