Little Deena is now 58 years old. I wonder where she lives.

Of course Long Island has long been a repulsive over the top parody of the suburbs. Especially the godforsaken Five Towns. Anybody who would move there deserves their perdition. Westchester and Northern New Jersey were much, much more cultured, livable and civilized.

I do like the picture of the MILF, though.

I wonder whether this was government propaganda to stop white flight. Some popular writers were enlisted to slow the activity. By ‘65, it was a major contributor to the collapse of city social structure.

I was joking earlier, but now I’ll be serious (serious face). As much as people excoriate suburbia, it’s what most Americans alive today grew up with. Most Americans don’t live on farms or in high-rise urban settings. So we’re used to it. It’s “home” to us. And truth be known, most people like uniformity, homogeneity, the familiar. They like to be in groups that are very similar to themselves. For better or worse, it’s comforting, rather than soul-numbing or mind-enslaving, for most regular folks.

A lot of women of the author’s generation felt the same way; this piece reminds me of early Erma Bombeck without the laughs.
It’s amazing how durable the suburban lifestyle she describes here proved, considering the sweeping social changes of the decade immediately following 1965, too.
