Jap Train Will Do 450 mph (They Say!)
PROFESSOR Hisanojo Ozawa of Japan has designed a radically new type of train that he claims will do 450 mph, whizzing by jet propulsion between upper and lower rollers. Recently he tested a model, which did a modest 25 mph but functioned perfectly as a mechanically guided missile. A problem: how do you get around curves? Professor Ozawa has the answer: curve lines of no less than 2.48 miles radius. •

“Jap” train? Apparently, the writer of this article was still a little cheesed at the Japanese 15 years after the end of WW2.

People were less politically correct in those days and that wasn’t regarded as unacceptable. I still recall seeing WWII propaganda cartoons on TV in that timeframe with Popeye beating up Japanese with thick glasses and buck teeth. I even recall seeing the infamous 1943 COAL BLACK & DE SEBBEN DWARVES on TV when I was a kid … it wasn’t really mean-spirited in intent but it was extremely offensive anyway, and from 1968 it’s been hard to find. I knew someone would make a comment about “Jap”, it wasn’t a bad thing until some white people decided they were offended for someone and and it became offensive.
I remember an auto repair shop called “Japanese Auto Professionals” (JAP) being protested because some people needed to feel better about themselves.

“The Japanese?! Those sandal-wearing goldfish tenders?!” Or something like that.

Actually the usual comment was on eye orientation and parentage. Ironically I’ve read Japanese manga where a character is called a “fox-eyed wench” because of her extreme eye shape. Reminds me of some of the slam comments black GIs I knew would make about other black GIs with exaggerated black features … I wouldn’t even dare quote them.
