What's the story on the cover? It looks like they're talking about kamikaze's in 1933, about 11 years ahead of their deployment.

Mike,

I got to use a system like that a few years ago when I went to an open house for a National Guard unit. I was REALLY good at it too . . . because it was based on the Duck Hunt game that my daughters had for their Nintendo system! The had changed the picture and added some sound and "kick" but it worked the same way, so I cleaned up on everyone else there (including the soldiers who were doing the demo ;^)

If firing a gun makes you a bundle of nerves perhaps joining the military isn't a good idea.

I saw somewhere that they are using something similar now. However this one uses air to simulate recoil and there is audio feedback. (You don't need the ear protection that you use with a standard rifle.) The objects are all computer generated and the weapons follow the specs of the field weapons.
Same idea as above.

It helps train muscle memory, so helps learning the real thing faster. Learn the good habits with a gun like object so they will be automatic when the rifle is actually used, less expensive training.

Why bother? They're still going to have to fire a real gun sometime, headache or not.
