Using a coin to unlock a shopping cart is common here in Canada, too, as are the locking wheels. The coin is typically a 25 cent piece ("quarter"), mainly due to sharing the same mechanizms with stores in the USA where the dollar coins are uncommon. A few stores use Loonies - typically department stores, not grocery stores.

The locking wheels are still a problem after a decade or so of their use - my local grocery keeps a remote control unlocking device at the checkout closest to the entrance, to zap carts with locked wheels for customers.

in Scandinavia, shopping carts are all neatly lined up under a roof just outside the supermarket door. they're chained together there, each one to the next one back, and shoppers always bring them back to chain them up again.

the way to unlock a shopping cart from the daisy chain is to stick a one-euro coin in the lock. the coin gets spit back out to you when you chain the cart back up again.

"Harry is a hypnotist. According to the Daily Herald of London, his clientele consists of 50 top English crooks. Before they go out on jobs, Harry hypnotizes them to give them extra confidence."
Oddly enough, one of the early Scooby Doo villians was named "Harry the Hypnotist"!

The last paragraph about the shopping-cart wheel-locks...
1) My local Hanaford's does that.
2) 09/24/09 NYC police arrest 3 who stole $108,000 worth of
carts and racks and sold them as scrap... for $8,000.

What would a near-mint Confederate $50 be worth today?

Of course, in the 21st Century, we don't have to worry about fraudlent
ads in the newspapers.
