I used my dad's weller gun to put together some heathkit ham equipment and a bench power supply in the '70's. Years (decades later) I bought my gun and it is the same model number as my dad's which he acquired in 1963.

I'm sorry, but that illustration can only be interpreted as suggesting an 8th way of getting that raise that isn't discussed in the article. I don't think that even in 1967 people would be quick to assume that's the wife celebrating the husband's raise.

And I grew up with my Father using that Weller soldering gun. I think there's even a light shining from the gun onto the tip. Carl Weller got his patent for Dual Heat gun in 1941, not for the pistol grip as they were already in use, but for the fact that his would heat INSTANTLY, and hotter than the ordinary soldering iron. Like any good bench technician with a great idea, he tried to sell his idea to someone else. But he pieced together nearly 300 of them on his own, selling them to his fellow radio repairmen. After 5 years of this, demand was so great he was able to set up Weller Manufacturing Corp. to produce the dual heat gun. And, forward thinker that he was, he outsourced the production of the dual heat gun overseas and kept Americans out of work long before this ad ever ran. That could well be Weller in the ad.

http://www.amazon.com/Weller-D550-Dual-Professional-Soldering/dp/B00002N5LO

I'm amazed how cheap this gun is, to this day. That's actually a more powerful version. And just keeping in the theme of the post that asked:

(Womp a deedah, womp a deedah, womp a deedah, womp a deedah)
Happy TRAILSSSSSSSS----- to you,
Until -- we meet -- again. . . .

I see not much has changed in regards to getting raises. Impressing the people that control your paycheck still works.
