R.U.R. stands, I believe, for “Rossum’s Universal Robots,” the name of the play by Capek, and where we got the word “robot.” The word is derived from the Czech word meaning “to work.”

Can’t see how he can walk, as the article states in the subtitle, since his feet seem to be attached to the platform holding the main motor and pulley system.

Unless they’re German (Richards und Reffell), it’s hard to see where the “U” comes from if not Capek.

Charlie, it’s safe to say that since Karel ?apek’s play had premiered in Czechoslovakia in 1921 and NY in 1922 that they were cashing in on the play. Especially since George B. Shaw and other luminaries were discussing in in 1924 http://jerz.setonhill.edu/resources/RUR/
