GUN TRADERS’ SUPERMARKET
You can get anything from a blunderbuss to a burp gun at this busy swap session.
ANY exhibition of guns, old or new, has a fascination for men of all sorts, from serious shooters and collectors to Walter Mittys who have never fondled anything more lethal than a cap pistol. The Gun Traders’ Market, a periodic event at Klein’s Sporting Goods Store in Elmwood Park, Ill., near Chicago, brings together a wide assortment of shooting irons and a large crowd of gun lovers from miles around. For those who only look, the trading and the traders are just as interesting as the guns. The event brings new customers, good will and lots of would-be Davy Crocketts to Klein’s.
What’s a blunderbuss? What’s a burp gun? Doesn’t seem to be a lot of woman there.

Blunderbus is an uber wide barrel shotgun-like weapon from the 1700’s… used for hunting fowl
Burp gun is slang for a German WW2 MP38 or MP40 9mm submachine gun.

it seems that that guy in the lower left hand corner of the picture is just asking to get a darwin award. Seriously you think that one of the people next to him would notice that he is looking down the barrel of a rifle.

Not a Darwin award. How else do you check the bore of a rifle without looking down the bore with the breech open? It’s a fuzzy photo but it looks like a Remington Rolling block rifle http://www.chuckhawks.com/remington_no1_rifles.htm
I mean, you’d have to be pretty gullible to buy a used rifle without checking the bore.

dude you would have to be a complete idiot to check the bore of a rifle like that. First of all, the man has no light source so you would not be able to tell much abouth the bore just from looking down it. You would be better off (since this was still in the era of replaceable parts) taking the barrel off and then looking down it, sure its not as easy but you run a lower risk of getting your head blown off if you forget to make sure that the gun is not loaded. Secondly, if you have ever taken rifle safety training, one of the first things you learn is to never, under any circumstances point the gun at anybody, including yourself. Also, given that this gun is used, the quality of it is not assured, guns can sometimes malfunction so the breach being open does not ensure that it will not go off in your face if you forgot to check that it was not loaded. so Yeah that guy is a moron.

blokeice: As I said, it looks a lot like a single shot breech (not breach) loading rolling block rifle and it’s difficult to determine but he probably has the rolling block open to allow light in otherwise he won’t be seeing much. Yeah I’m sure the owner would let everyone who comes by his table take the barrel off of the rifle. By the way, Hipshot the only way to remove the barrel on that rifle is to unscrew it http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/remrolbl.htm after removing a locking screw. If they are indoors the light source is up above where that guy seems to be pointing the breech at. Talk about “complete idiots”. Tell you what “expert” try actually going to a gun show and see how far you get disassembling every rifle or shotgun that you want to inspect the barrel on.

Spork: Indeed. Wasn’t Mickey the most famous person in the world at one time? Tempus Fugit.
As to looking down barrels, we used to have a particular way of holding the FNC1 with the breech open and the right thumb inserted at a angle, so as to use the thumbnail as a mirror to reflect light back at the inspecting officer (or Sergeant Major, more commonly) on parade. We used to toss around the idea of clear nail polish.
