The way this machine works is, place the note on the square rope basket located on the top of the machine, when you press one of the two levers on the front, the basket rotates towards the front and shows the note in the window and at the same time a small tray with change slips out of the rack on the bottom with change in it. I beleave the machine helped the clerk so he or she did not have to count or handle the money. It would already be precounted, all the clerk would have to do is watch what was placed in the basket.

It was rather a safe, with an expensive exchange system. A clerck using both hands and paying attention at time of picking up the coins and dropping off the bill would be enough to save the investment on such technology… But people still buy $400 Blackberries to send SMS, right?

Myles: Yes, but then one have to pay the clerks salary, and the clerk could also made the change for you. So there’s no point of purchasing such machine and pay the clerk. Of course the lack of proper authentication could explain, why the company went out of business so soon.

Maybe it did not try to authenticate the note because it was supervised by a clerk.

Jari: I tried too, it’ll be a British patent and those are more difficult to look up even if we could make out the number.

I can’t quite make the patent number. It could have shed some light to that. It doesn’t look that it uses electricity as it’s quite compact, so could it be just check the size and weight of the note?

I wonder the same thing Jari. Modern validators use several methods to authenticate notes and determine the denomination. All of then use the size of the note and an optical read of unique features in the printing. Many also check the magnetic signature of the note as a further check of authenticity.

I really wonder, how the authenticy of the notes was determined on that gizmo…. Can anyone borrow a stack of paper, scissors, greenish crayon and a one pound note?
