There used to be a 'belief' that young girls were able to have children more quickly than their married counterparts, as so many gave birth just a few short months after their weddings.

Oh, and the even more astonishing wallbanger about the last part: every one of my mother's group of friends was pregnant at the altar. My mother was the only exception, and I gathered that that wasn't due to lack of opportunity.

Strange as it seems, women at this point needed to hear that it was OK to have an active, healthy sex drive.

My own mother was told on the night before her wedding that there were only two reasons for a woman to have sex - to satisfy her man, and to become pregnant. She was also told that no true woman had (or admitted to) a sex drive of any kind, and certainly no true woman would be sexually aggressive towards her husband - that would be as emasculating and as disgusting as failing to fake an orgasm so his delicate male ego wouldn't be crushed. (Whether you really enjoyed it or not was immaterial - sex was for him and only for him, so if he wanted you to enjoy it you pretended to.)

On the other hand, it was vitally important to play "hard to get" at times because men were disgusted by women who always said yes - even their wives. The theory was that a man would feel more secure married to a woman who had to be talked into it, because if she wasn't really interested in sex with him she wouldn't be interested in sex with anyone else.

My mother repeated this astonishing wallbanger of a conversation to me to point out that just because someone is older and in a position of authority doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. The sad part, though, is that every one of her friends received roughly the same "advice" from their mothers before their weddings.
